The Slackers are one of the more well-known bands emerging from the New York City ska scene, having been formed in Brooklyn in 1991. The band's sound is a mix of ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, soul, garage rock, and jazz.

The Slackers' notability is credited to their prolific career, tours of North America, Europe, and elsewhere, and signing to notable punk label Hellcat Records.
There are several side projects of The Slackers, including David Hillyard & The Rocksteady Seven, Crazy Baldhead Sound System, Da Whole Thing, the SKAndalous All Stars, as well as an acoustic solo project by Vic Ruggiero. Vic Ruggiero, Jay Nugent, and David Hillyard were also in the NYC Ska band Stubborn All-Stars lead by frontman King Django.

While NYC's The Slackers have been influenced and even personally taught by Jamaican ska/reggae originators like the Skatalites and the Upsetters, the band sees its music through an American lens. This group is equally appreciative of old blues, 60s soul, rock, and R&B as it is of reggae, rocksteady, dub, and ska. It s as if the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds had grown up on Bob Marley as well as Muddy Waters. The Slackers are now set to release their 7th studio full
length, Self Medication 12 brilliant songs that find the band continuing to transcend the confines of genre. From the eerie ring of the title track to the bluesy stomp of Don t You Want A Man, this album finds the band experimenting with new sounds, as well as delivering their signature reggae and ska riffs. Saxophonist Dave Hillyard commented ''Self Medication is designed to be listened to in a certain order. It s an old fashioned way of doing things, but it s meant to keep and sustain a certain atmosphere for the 50 odd minutes it runs.'' After a long run of successful albums on Tim Armstrong's Hellcat/Epitaph label, Self Medication marks the bands first LP on newly formed Indication Records, which is run by their old friends and ex-label mates The Pietasters. The Slackers will be self medicating throughout 2008 on the road, with dates booked in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and UK to support the record.

The Slackers - Question (1998):

01. Manuel
02. Knowing
03. Have The Time
04. And I Wonder?
05. No More Crying
06. Feed My Girl
07. Mountainside
08. The Mummy
09. Motor City
10. Power
11. Keep Him Away
12. The Question
13. The Question (Version)
14. Face In My Crowd
15. Do You Know
16. Yes It's True
17. Alone Again
18. Make Me Smile
19. No Love

Sometimes growing up is the worst thing that can happen to a rock & roll band. However, it's almost always the best thing that can happen to a ska band. Why? Because when ska bands grow up, they slow down and start paying attention to craft, the last thing on the mind of most young skasters. The Slackers are something of a departure from the norm in that regard -- they've sounded like grown-ups from day one. But their latest effort still shows the effects of growth and maturation, both musical and emotional. For one thing, there's almost as much reggae as ska here: the elastic rocksteady beat of "Knowing" follows close on the heels of the Latin ska bounce of "Manuel," while the 2 Tone inflections of "And I Wonder?" lead directly into the straight one-drop riddim of "No More Crying." For another thing, bandleader Vic Ruggiero is worried about mortality and the nature of love, and his lyrics are all the better for it. Songs like "The Question" and "Have the Time" actually reflect some serious and skillful thinking -- another rarity in the world of ska, quite frankly. If the Slackers keep getting better, things are going to get scary very quickly.
